The sun is out and suddenly everyone is talking about SUNSCREEN. But sunscreens are not all equal. Did you know that chemical filters present in conventional, easily available sunscreens lead to serious health, skin problems and reef bleaching? If you, as we, care about those aspects then read this post before you buy your sunscreen.

Mineral vs chemical filters - what is the difference?

Conventional sunscreens are commonly formulated with chemical filters such as benzophenone or oxybenzone. They absorb UV rays, but numerous studies have shown they can cause allergies, skin irritations but more importantly some chemical UV filters have been shown to have endocrine activity, mimicking estrogen or testosterone.

On the other hand, mineral sunscreens always contain natural filters such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Those filters do not have to be absorbed by the skin to be effective - they reflect UV rays just by staying on the skin! That is why, mineral sunscreens have less harmful effects on…

Chemical sunscreens get easily absorbed by the skin and then, they turn UV rays into heat. This may cause allergic reaction or heat rash. 

Mineral sunscreen sit on top of the skin and are very gentle for the skin. Great for kids, acne-prone skin and sensitive skin.

As we swim and enjoy the warm waters of the ocean, our sunscreens get washed out and swim with us... Each year, thousands of tons of sunscreens gets into the oceans, where they're absorbed by corals and marine life. Chemical filters contain nanoparticles that disrupt coral's reproduction and growth cycles leading to bleaching... Our corals are dying - and there is an easy way to stop that!

On some beaches bringing chemical sunscreen is prohibited. Hawaii, known for its beautiful reef, voted to ban the sale of chemical sunscreens (those containing oxybenzone and octinoxate) from 2021.

Mineral sunscreens are biodegradable and completely reef-safe! If not for the skin, choose them for our planet!
