What is lactic acid?

Lactic acid (2-hydroxypropanoic acid) is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). It occurs naturally in fermented milk and is produced by the body when it metabolises glucose. In skincare, it is found in cleansers, serums, masks and peels for its exfoliating and hydrating properties.

The benefits of lactic acid for the skin

Gentle exfoliation: it loosens the bonds between dead cells on the surface, for smoother, more luminous skin. Its molecule is larger than that of glycolic acid and penetrates more slowly, so it is generally better tolerated by sensitive skin.
Hydration: it is a humectant, which helps the skin retain water.
A more even tone: by speeding up cell renewal, it helps fade the appearance of pigmentation marks.
Refined texture: used regularly, it improves the look of skin texture and fine lines.

How to use it

Start with a low concentration, two to three times a week, then increase the frequency depending on how your skin tolerates it. Avoid combining it on the same evening with other exfoliants or with retinol. AHAs increase sensitivity to the sun, so apply sun protection every morning.
