A guide to dry brushing

Le guide du brossage à sec

Dry brushing means brushing dry skin with a natural-fibre brush before showering. This guide covers where the practice comes from, the right technique and the products to apply afterwards.

Dry brushing the body

What is dry brushing?

Known as "garshana", dry brushing has its roots in Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India. It involves brushing dry skin, from the bottom upwards, with a brush made of natural or synthetic bristles. The movement exfoliates the surface of the skin and supports lymphatic drainage; many people associate it with a feeling of lighter legs.

How to dry brush

Once or twice a week, on dry skin, before showering:

  • Start at the feet, then work up the calves, thighs and buttocks to the groin.
  • Use light, circular movements on the front and then the back of the body, repeating each sequence three times.
  • Continue with the hands, forearms and arms, brushing towards the armpits.
  • Brush the stomach clockwise, then the chest and back, towards the neck.
  • Finish with the neck and collarbone, again towards the armpits.

Avoid sensitive, irritated or broken skin. Wash the brush once a week with soap and let it dry completely before the next use.

What are the benefits of dry brushing?

The brush works as a mechanical exfoliant: it removes dead skin cells and refines skin texture. Brushing stimulates microcirculation and can help limit ingrown hairs. It is also often part of routines that aim to reduce the appearance of cellulite. And it is a ritual of just a few minutes that fits easily into a wellbeing routine.
